Arsenal Won NewCastle To Top The EPL Table

Arsenal came through a real test of their title mettle by claiming a 1-0 win at Newcastle United.
The Magpies came into the game on the crest of a wave, having won seven of their last nine games, but a second-half goal from Olivier Giroud was enough to claim the three points for Arsene Wenger’s men.The first notable chance was carved out by Newcastle thanks to a raking ball from Yohan Cabaye, but Mathieu Debuchy did not do justice to the pass, as his first touch was awful and the ball ran away from him.
Arsenal found openings tough to fashion in the first half, with the Gunners restricted to long-range shots from the likes of Jack Wilshere, Tomas Rosicky and Santi Cazorla which were no real threat to Tim Krul.

2014: FG To Maintain Presidential Jets With N1.52Bn - Punch

The Federal Government has budgeted N1.52b for the maintenance of the 10 aircraft currently in the Presidential Air Fleet in 2014.
The maintenance cost is slightly higher than the N1.5bn proposed as the initial deposit for the purchase of additional aircraft that will bring the number of aircraft in the fleet to 11.
This is apart from the N747m earmarked for the purchase of aviation fuel for the aircraft already in the fleet.
These figures are contained in the details of the 2014 Appropriation Bill presented to the National Assembly by President Goodluck Jonathan through the Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, penultimate week.

Arsène Wenger confident Arsenal can survive tricky Newcastle test

Arsène Wenger
The Gunners moved back to the top of the table by beating West Ham 3-1 at Upton Park on Boxing Day, having gone behind at the start of the second half before Theo Walcott's double salvo and Lukas Podolski's crisp strike put the visitors back on course.
There is, though, little time for Wenger's squad to revel in their lofty position as the hectic festive schedule continues at St James' Park on Sunday against a team fast closing in on the top four following the 5-1
win over of Stoke which was a seventh victory in nine Premier League games.
"Newcastle are in full confidence, they are doing well and won again on Boxing Day with a big score," said Wenger. "Loic Remy is a very good striker, very quick and makes very good runs, so we have to keep him quiet. That will all be another test, but our team wants to do well, the character is great and our concentration is top."
Arsenal will be without Wales midfielder Aaron Ramsey for the rest of the festive matches, possibly even the third-round FA Cup date with Tottenham on January 4, after he limped off at Upton Park with a thigh problem.
Ramsey is due to undergo a scan and Wenger will be hoping that does not reveal a muscle tear which could keep the Wales international out for a longer period.
Wenger, though, does have some options, with Podolski back from a four-month hamstring injury lay-off, while Czech playmaker Tomas Rosicky was left out completely on Boxing Day and England international Jack Wilshere is back from his two-game ban.
"We have a very short time to prepare, but maybe we can rotate a little bit as well," said Wenger. "I rested (Santi) Cazorla for a few games and you could see against West Ham he had an outstanding game and what a difference that makes when the player is fresh.

The marriage of popular comedienne Princess has crashed.
Nigerian Entertainment Today has confirmed that Princess (real names Oluwadamilola Adekoya) and her hubby Shola have gone their separate ways putting behind them the 7 month-old rocky union.
NET investigations reveal that trouble started about two weeks after the wedding in May, 2013.
Insiders told NET that the marriage was characterised by endless disagreements, often requiring the intervention of friends and family.
‘It’s been  7 months of a series of efforts to mend the broken marriage until it was obvious that it was beyond repair’ one insider told us today.
Speaking to a NET correspondent, Princess confirms the separation, saying ‘Yes my marriage has ended due to irreconcilable differences’.
She admitted to our reporter that the union has not been as blissful as many thought. ‘We have been having issues since the wedding but we still remained together hoping that we would be able to work it out. But apparently, we couldn’t work it out, hence the reason for our separation.

Suarez sets record for goals scored in a month

Suarez signs new Liverpool contract
Luis Suarez's brace sent Liverpool top of the Barclays Premier League with a 3-1 win over Cardiff City at Anfield.
The Liverpool striker, who signed a new long-term deal on Friday, made it 10 goals in four games. Suarez put Liverpool in front with a volley from outside the area after 25 minutes and then turned provider for Raheem Sterling three minutes before the interval. There was enough time for Suarez to grab a third, his 29th Barclays Premier League goal of the calendar year, before the break to put Liverpool firmly in control.
Cardiff showed fight in the second half, with Jordon Mutch reducing the deficit just before the hour, but it was not enough as their winless away run in the top flight was extended to six matches.
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers made no changes from the side who beat Tottenham Hotspur 5-0 on Sunday. Suarez retained the captaincy after scoring eight goals in his previous three matches. The visitors made just one change from their 1-0 success over West Bromwich Albion, with Aron Gunnarsson replacing Fraizer Campbell, who dropped to the bench.
Suarez was first to threaten with a shot that clipped David Marshall's side netting after two minutes as the hosts applied early pressure. Craig Noone had Cardiff's first effort, forcing a save from Simon Mignolet following a quick counter after 16 minutes.
Suarez broke Cardiff's resolve when he produced a superb volleyed finish to Jordan Henderson's cross, capping off a magnificent team goal. Liverpool came close to doubling their advantage seven minutes before the interval when John Flanagan almost turned a Glen Johnson cross past Marshall from a tight angle.
Sterling added the second with his third goal in four games, tapping Suarez's pass into an open net, before the Uruguay forward again struck to complete his brace. After a neat backheel from Henderson, Suarez curled an effort past Marshall and into the right-hand corner of the net for his 19th goal of the season.
After a low-key start to the second half, Mutch pulled a goal back for the visitors, heading home unmarked from Guy Whittingham's delivery after 58 minutes. It ended a run of 498 minutes without an away Barclays Premier League goal for Cardiff, who were much improved after the interval.
But a comeback never looked likely and Suarez was only denied a hat-trick by the width of a post as the hosts climbed to the summit.

BA is first UK airline to permit gadget use on take off and landing

From today, British Airways has become the first UK airline to take advantage of the new European rules allowing in-flight use of electronic devices during all phases of flight.
The agreement with the UK’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), which lifted previous restrictions after an European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) ruling in November, allows passengers on BA flights to use their phones, tablets, e-readers and music players set to “airplane mode” throughout their entire journey, including take off and landing.
“We know that our customers want to use their handheld electronic devices more, so this will be very welcome news for them," said BA flight training manager Captain Ian Pringle.
BA estimated that the new regulations would provide an average of 30 minutes extra screen time for those attempting to watch TV programmes or movies on tablets and smartphones or reading on e-readers.
The go-ahead was given to BA by the CAA after the airline presented a satisfactory safety case displaying rigorous testing of small electronic devices on board its aircraft to the governing body, as is required for any airline wishing to take advantage of the new regulations.

Facebook and Zuckerberg to sell shares

 Mark Zuckerberg

Facebook plans to sell 70 million additional shares of stock -- nearly 60% of which will be sold by founder Mark Zuckerberg.

The company, in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing Thursday, said it will sell 27 million shares. And Zuckerberg will exercise an option to purchase 60 million shares and then sell 41.4 million shares to pay the taxes on that transaction. Other existing shareholders will sell the remaining 1.6 million shares.

Zuckerberg also plans to donate an additional 18 million shares of Facebook, worth about $1 billion, to charity by the end of the year, according to the company. Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan were the second-biggest charitable donors in the United States last year, according to a ranking from The Chronicle of Philanthropy. Billionaire investor Warren Buffett was number one.
The shares will be donated to the Silicon Valley Community Foundation, which also received 18 million shares from Zuckerberg last December. But they are worth twice as much this year.
Shares of Facebook (FB, Fortune 500) fell 2% in early trading.
Related: Facebook's 'teen problem'
Facebook will be added to the Standard & Poor's 500 index after the close of trading Friday, which will further drive up demand for shares.
But Thursday's filing means that current shareholders' stake will be diluted in value.
In September 2012, when Facebook shares were down more than 50% from the IPO price, Zuckerberg said in a filing he would hold onto his shares for at least a year. Shares since then have more than tripled in value.
Zuckerberg currently holds 425 million class B shares, which give him a majority of voting rights. The shares he is selling will be converted to Class A shares to reduce their voting rights.
Related: Facebook launches video ads
At Wednesday's closing price, the sale will raise $2.3 billion for Zuckerberg and $1.5 billion for the company.

The company did not identify any specific purpose for the money it will raise. Facebook has been on an acquisition binge in recent years, most notably paying $1 billion for photo sharing network Instagram just ahead of Facebook's May 2012 IPO

Michael Abebolaja Found Guilty of Killing British Soldier

A court in London has found two men guilty of killing a British soldier, Lee Rigby near a military barracks in Southeast London in May.
In a verdict that took about 90 minutes to come at the Old Bailey court in London, the two were found guilty of attempted murder of a police officer.
Michael Adebolajo, 29, and Michael Adebowale, 22, had pleaded not guilty to both charges. The two men are expected to be sentenced in January.
As he was led out of court after the verdict, Adebolajo faced the media and kissed his Quran.
Cell phone footage replayed in court at the trial showed Adebolajo, still clutching a meat cleaver in his bloody hands, ranting that the killing was “an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth” for British soldiers killing Muslims overseas.
In a statement given outside the court, the soldier’s family gave their thanks for the “overwhelming support” they had received and for the help to get justice for Rigby.
Read by Detective Inspector, Pete Sparks, the family statement said that his relatives were proud of how Rigby had served his country.
“This is the toughest time of our lives. No one should have to go through what we’ve been through as a family. We are satisfied that justice has been done, but unfortunately no amount of justice will bring Lee back,” the statement said.
“These people have taken him away from us forever, but his memory lives on in all of us and we will never forget him.”
The family, asking to be left alone to grieve in private, said that they would now focus on the future of Rigby’s young son, Jack.

Okonjo-Iweala Presents N4.6 Trillion 2014 Budget To NASS

The Federal Government has proposed a budget estimate of N4.6 Trillion for the 2014 fiscal year, one billion less than the 2013 figure.
The budget, which was laid before the two chambers of the National Assembly by the Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, also estimates that N268.4 billion will be spent on the Subsidy Re-Investment and Empowerment Programme (SURE-P).
According to the minister, the budget supports the federal government’s drive to diversify the economy and create jobs.
The National Assembly had deferred the presentation of the budget on a number of times which made President Goodluck Jonathan to direct the Finance Minister to submit the budget proposal to the National Assembly.
The aggregate expenditure for the budget is put at N4.642 trillion. This excludes the Subsidy Re-Investment and Empowerment Programme, which is put at N268.37 billion for the Federal Government.
The expected revenue is N3.73 trillion. The capital budget is N1.1 trillion, which is about 27 percent of the budget and the recurrent is about 72 percent.
The fiscal deficit is 1.9 percent of GDP and the oil benchmark is 77.5 dollar per barrel. The minister explained the reduction in the figure budget proposal from 2013.
The law makers are expected to begin work on the budget proposal, but that can only take place next year following the adjournment of legislative proceedings till January 14, 2014.
She said, “This budget is the budget for job creation and inclusive growth; meaning that its a budget which will continue the president’s transformation agenda for several sectors of the economy.
“The budget is going to support the push in agriculture; it will kick-start the housing sector where we can create more jobs; it is designed to promote our policies that would support manufacturing because jobs would be created there.
“Industries will also be created in solid minerals. All these support will continued to be unleashed.  Job creation is the key to really solving the problems of the Nigerian economy.”
The former World Bank chief laid the document before the senators during their plenary, presided over by Senate President David Mark.
Mark said the action was in conformity with section 81 of the 1999 Constitution as amended,  which empowered the President to communicate the budget to the National Assembly.

South African Minister Ebrahim Patel launches Mandela Fashion Award for Designers, Scholarships & other Living Memorials

Mandela Fashion Award for Designers - BellaNaija - December 2013001

Mandela Fashion Award for Designers - BellaNaija - December 2013002 South African Minister of Economic Development – Ebrahim Patel

With the passing of a great icon, there are always ways to remember them. For Nelson Mandela, it was his love for mankind, his works of humanitarianism and the struggle against apartheid that freed the South African people. Now, we can add three more accolades to the South African giant as the South African Minister of Economic Development, Ebrahim Patel has announced the launch of 3 living memorials to the legacy of Nelson Mandela.
Addressing a group of workers in the Pep Clothing Factory memorial service for Mandela in Cape Town, he announced a Mandela Scholarship to 10 university students, a Madiba School Bursary for 100 primary or high school children with disabilities and special needs and a Mandela Fashion Award for designers who promote local jobs and fashion innovation.
The memorials are to be sponsored by the South African Clothing and Textiles Workers Union(SACTWU).
Speaking at the event, Ebrahim said “These awards speak to three key things we remember Madiba for: his passion for education, his love for children and of course, and his colourful shirts. They ensure that the memory of a great man is carried forward in acts that transform the lives of people. The result was that the previous offer by the National Party government for wide scale tariff reduction was replaced with a more balanced trade agreement that has helped to save tens of thousands of clothing and textile jobs. It is the measure of the man that he did this while he was in Norway in December 1993, ready to receive the Nobel Peace Prize.”
The memorial gathering was marked by songs on the life of Madiba, as Afrikaans and Xhosa speaking workers stood patiently in the sun during the open air gathering at the country’s largest clothing factory.

A world 1st: 2 openly gay men become Prime Minister & deputy PM

Some people say the world is coming to an end...and maybe it is! Lol. For the first time in history, a country will have an openly gay man as both its Prime Minister and its Deputy Prime Minister. On Wednesday December 4th, openly gay talk show host, Xavier Bettel (pictured left) was sworn in as the Prime Minister of Luxemburg, while another openly gay man, Etienne Schneider, (pictured right) was made his deputy, making Luxemburg the first county in the world with gay men filling the top two spots in its government
"People do not consider the fact of whether someone is gay or not. Sometimes it’s not easy because you have some conservative persons, but there are always less and less and less. I think people vote for my character and they vote for my full party.” Bettel said
And guess the first thing he's doing? Gay weddings. Hehe
“Gay weddings will be done soon. At the moment in Luxembourg, we have to change the situation of marriage, religion and divorce laws. But I don’t think it’ll be in the next five years – it’ll be next year.” Prime Minister Bettel promised.
A pic of the 40 year old Prime Minister and his partner after the cut...
