New media and The 10 Things you must know about Nigeria’s Cybercrime Act 2015

Image
Digital media has been touted as new and exciting platform for international development. The Internet, cell phones and other social technologies have been used to strengthen communities by making information readily available and by empowering the voiceless.  Internet and communications technology is undoubtedly a tool that can be harnessed for positive social change, but as with every other technological advancement, ICT is a double-edged sword. As access to new media increases, there is growing concern among academics, activists and technology professionals that real-world issues of privacy, security, conflict and crime are moving into the digital sphere more quickly than they can be monitored or addressed. For digital advocates and new media users, the major areas of concern has always been the double edged issue of government control of freedom of expression and the legal challenges of an increasingly global Internet community and the ways in which some private citizens ...

Olajumoke Orisaguna: The Nigerian Cinderella By Reuben Abati

Image
About three weeks ago, 27-year old Olajumoke Orisaguna was a complete unknown on the streets of Lagos, hawking bread.  A loaf of bread is about N100, and even with a full tray such as she carried in her first public embrace of fame, her whole ware for a day may not be more than N3,000, with daily profit between N300-N700.  She had trained as a hair stylist, got married but had to leave her husband and a daughter back home in Ire, Osun state, to “hustle” as it were in Lagos. The life of a bread seller in Lagos is easily imaginable: exposure to the elements, to sundry abuse, including the possibility of being raped by unruly artisans and bachelors, who will offer to buy bread and something else along with it, if the hawker is willing. This was Olajumoke Orisaguna’s reality until she ran into TY Bello and Tinie Tempah and her life changed. Today, she has been enrolled as a model. Her story has appeared in all newspapers, on CNN, Huffington Post, and virtually everywhere online....

Google paid Apple $1 billion to be the search engine on your iPhone

Image
The fact that Google is the default search engine on your browser is not a coincidence. It's a $1 billion deal between Google and Apple. That was the previously unknown revelation in a Jan. 14 court hearing around a completely unrelated issue: Oracle's lawsuit against Google for a long-running and very boring copyright dispute about whether Google borrowed Oracle's Java technology to build Android phones. The documents show that Google paid Apple $1 billion in 2014 to be the preferred search engine on the iPhone, reported Bloomberg News. The two companies then agreed to share revenue — presumably from search ads — but it's not clear how the money was split. Apple and Google both lobbied the court to strike the details of their search deal from court documents, Bloomberg reported, with Google arguing it was "highly sensitive." When Google asked the court to hide the details of the deal, it said the information could hinder similar deals with other companies, ...

Arsenal Transfer News: Latest on Aaron Ramsey and Mathieu Debuchy Rumours

Image
Arsenal will not stand in Aaron Ramsey's way of a move to Barcelona, with the Primera Division giants set to step up their interest in the midfielder, according to reports. According to an exclusive piece from John Richardson in the Daily Express, Barcelona are happy to go as high as £60 million in their attempts to sign the Welshman, who was apparently watched by the Catalans during Wednesday’s 3-3 draw with Liverpool, a game in which the 25-year-old scored a fine goal. “Barcelona attempted to land the former Cardiff [City] attacking midfielder last summer only for Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger to reject their overtures,”  wrote Richardson. “But I understand from sources close to Ramsey that the Gunners won’t deny the player the opportunity of joining the likes of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar at Barcelona next season.” It’d certainly be a tantalising proposition for Ramsey, who continues to show his value to the Gunners with brilliant performances. As noted by MisterChip, the...

Manchester City keep pace in title hunt despite stale win over Palace

Image
Winning a league title is as much about the remorseless accumulation of mundane victories as it is about results against the elite, and reeling off those victories against the Premier League's mid-ranking and lesser lights has been a problem for City. This may come to be seen as a run-of-the-mill, tick-the-box win, and in the sense that, having taken the lead, City never looked like losing it, perhaps it was, but equally it would be hard to pretend this was City playing at anything like its best. It would be wrong to be too critical of a side that has just won by four clear goals but equally it would be fallacious to pretend this suddenly heralds an upturn in City's form. This was that oddest of things: An unconvincing 4-0 win. Once again there was a slow start and again without Vincent Kompany it looked vulnerable defensively. There was little urgency about anything it did. But two goal...
