Super Eagles, 23 others to earn cryptocurrency in AFCON

Super Eagles players representing Nigeria at the ongoing African Nations Cup (AFCON) in Cameroon will receive payments in cryptocurrency throughout their stay in the tournament.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) had last year banned trading in cryptocurrency in the country.

Although the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) will pay the players in Naira for wearing the country’s colours at AFCON, some of them will earn crypto for their exploits in Africa’s flagship soccer tournament due to the involvement of the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, Binance, in the tournament.

Binance recently sealed a sponsorship deal with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for the tournament.

Players representing the 24 countries participating in the AFCON are expected to benefit from the largesse.

The Binance Director for Africa, Emmanuel Babalola, who spoke on the development said: “Football is the most popular sport in Africa, one that unites the entire continent and as the leading blockchain ecosystem, we are proud to be an official sponsor of the AFCON tournament. This corroborates our mission to take crypto mainstream across the continent.”

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) said Point of Sales (POS) transactions value had increased from N38 million per month in 2012 to N24 billion monthly in June, 2014This is contained in a report on e-payment transactions released by the apex bank in Abuja on Monday.According to the report, mobile money transaction values up to N819 million monthly.“The POS transaction increased in volume from less than 2000 in January 2012 to 1.6 million per month as at June 2014.“Over 150,000 POS terminal is presently across the country and 22 mobile money operators has been licensed,’’ it added.It added that licensed Payment Terminal Service providers increased from five to 10 to increase POS terminal penetration across the country.It noted that Nigeria Inter Bank Settlement System (NIBSS) instant Transfer had increased in volume from 87,000 transactions a month in January 2012 to 3.1 million transactions a month as at June 2014.

  A former Minister of Aviation, Osita Chidoka, has appealed to Anambra state pupil, Mmesoma Ejikeme, whose JAMB result was withdrawn, to ‘’come clean" with the source of her result so he can beg the board to show some leniecy towards her.   In a statement released on Wednesday July 5, Chidoka, who is also the owner of the Computer-Based Testing (CBT) Centre where Mmesoma sat for her examination, said he will beg the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) for leniency, if she explains how she got the result she was parading. He pointed out that the result Mmesoma was parading had the initial name on his center which has since been changed. His statement reads;     “Miss Nmesoma Ejikeme took her 2023 JAMB at my foundation’s Computer-Based Testing (CBT) Center at Obosi.
