Breaking: Court to decide ex-Gov Bello’s bail on December 10

The High Court of the Federal Capital Territory sitting at Maitama on Wednesday remanded the immediate past Governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, in custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC. Trial Justice Maryann Anenih ordered that he should remain with the anti-graft agency till December 10, when the court will rule on his application for bail.  Equally remanded in custody were Bello’s two co-defendants, Umar Oricha and Abdulsalami Hudu. The defendants had pleaded not guilty to a 16-count charge the EFCC preferred against them.  EFCC had specifically urged the court to deny the former governor bail. Breaking: Ex-Gov Bello pleads not guilty to 16-count charge

The immediate past Governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, on Wednesday, pleaded not guilty to a 16-count charge the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, preferred against him.  Bello was docked before trial Justice Maryann Anenih of a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory sitting at Maitama, alongside two other defendants, Umar Oricha and Abdulsalami Hudu. The defendants were accused of complicity in a N110billion fraud. It will be recalled that the erstwhile governor’s whereabouts remained unknown till yesterday when he surrendered himself after a protracted hide-and-seek game between him and the anti-graft agency. Dressed in white caftan and blue cap, Bello, mounted the dock around 9:45am. The charge against the defendants, marked: CR/7781, borders on conspiracy, criminal breach of trust and possession of unlawfully obtained property. Customs intercepts 21 vehicles stolen from Canada in Lagos and Rivers Ports (photos)

The Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, on Tuesday, November 26, said the Service has intercepted 21 stolen vehicles worth several billions of naira stolen from Canada.   The Customs boss also displayed arms and ammunition intercepted inside a commercial bus coming from Aba in Abia State to Lagos.   Among the vehicles stolen were three 2021 Toyota Highlanders; one Mercedes-Benz G550; Range Rover Sport; one Mercedes-AMG GT with Lamborghini Huracan; one Rolls Royce; Lamborghini 2019 Model; two Range Rovers (2023 & 2018 Models); 3 Toyota Highlander 2021 Models, among others.   Addressing journalists during the handing over of the seized vehicles, the Customs CG who revealed that West Africa has emerged as a notable destination hub in the global stolen vehicle trade network, revealed that the vehicles were Intercepted in Lekki, Tin-Can Island in Lagos and Onne Port, Rivers State.   According to him, the network extends fr...

$3.5m romance scam: Court jails two US-based Nigerians for 30 years

A United States federal court has sentenced Anthony Ibekie and Samuel Aniukwu to a combined 30 years in prison for defrauding American citizens of $3.5 million. In a statement published on the US Department of Justice website, the duo was said to have orchestrated a romance scam, luring victims with false claims of inheriting substantial fortunes that required upfront payments to access.The statement explained that law enforcement conducted an undercover investigation that exposed the fraud schemes.It read, “An undercover law enforcement investigation has resulted in federal prison sentences for two Nigerian nationals residing in the Chicago suburbs who conducted online inheritance scams and other fraud schemes. “Using aliases, Anthony Emeka Ibekie and Samuel Aniukwu communicated with victims throughout the United States, convincing them they had received substantial inheritances and needed to send money to individuals associated with the defendants in order to claim it. “In addition t...

Breaking: Port Harcourt Refinery begins crude oil processing

The Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has confirmed that the Port Harcourt Refinery in Rivers State has commenced crude oil processing. The Chief Corporate Communications Officer of the compnay, Femi Soneye, broke the news on Tuesday.Soneye revealed that the refinery will operate at 60 percent capacity and process 60,000bpd.Today marks a monumental achievement for Nigeria as the Port Harcourt Refinery officially commences crude oil processing. This groundbreaking milestone signifies a new era of energy independence and economic growth for our nation,” Soneye said on Tuesday. “Hearty congratulations to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the NNPC Board, and the exceptional leadership of GCEO Mele Kyari for their unwavering commitment to this transformative project.
