Ebola: Experimental drug developed by Nigerian arrives Nigeria

The experimental drug developed by a Nigerian in diaspora for the treatment of Ebola is expected to arrive the country , the Minister for Health, Onyebuchi Chukwu, has said.   The drug, called “Nanosilver”, has been approved for use by the World Health Organization (WHO) as an experimental treatment ethical in the case of the Ebola epidemic. The Federal Govt  approved the use of experimental drugs in the treatment of the deadly virus.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Dangote Foundation, Mrs Adhiambo Odaga announced this at a media briefing at the Ministry of Health, Abuja on Monday. FIFA orders Maigari’s return

World soccer governing body, FIFA has again ordered the return of the impeached president of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Alhaji Aminu Maigari. FIFA in a letter ad- dressed to NFF scribe (which Daily Sunsports is in possession of) stated that the sacked NFF boss must preside over the August 26 congress. While regretting the confused state of Nigerian football, FIFA stressed that all the actions taken by the exco of late including the sacking of Barrister  Chris Green and Yusuf Ahmed Fresh, as well as the sacking of the electoral committee should be set aside. The FIFA letter stated in part: “It is regrettable that the situation has turned so confused while elections are planned for August 26….the recent decisions of the executive committee are highly question- able…furthermore, we advise that President Maigari must preside over the NFF congress on 26 August.

iPhone market share drops in Q2, BlackBerry up slightly

After three consecutive quarters of sequential decline, shipments BlackBerrys  rebounded slightly in Q2 of this year from the previous quarter, market research firm IDC reported Thursday in a report on smartphone shipments. It shipped 1.5 million units in the quarter ending June 30. On the other hand, for the same period a year ago it shipped 6.7 million smart phones. In this year’s Q2 it accounted for one half of one per cent of all smart phone sales. By comparison 7.4 million Windows Phones shipped — although that was a drop from 8.2 million in the same period a year ago. Apple shipped 35.2 million iPhones in Q2 this year — a drop of 12,7 per cent over the same period a year ago. Another man dies of Ebola in Nigeria

Nigeria has recorded another death from the outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus. This time it is a staff of the Lagos Liason office of the Economic Community of West African State - ECOWAS headquarters, Mr Jatto Abdulqudir. Confirming his death in a statement, ECOWAS management said the 36 year old man was among those who assisted the late Liberian Patrick Sawyerr when he came to Lagos for a regional meeting and was quarantined after Sawyerr died of the deadly disease. According to the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, Daniel Adeyileka (pictured above) is the youngest pilot in Nigeria. He was born in 1995 in Newcastle, England and had his primary and secondary education in Scotland then came back to Nigeria to do his A-levels. At 17, he proceeded to Delta Flight school in Texas, USA, where he obtained his Private Pilot License (PPL) and his International General Certificate of Secondary Education. POS Transactions Increase to N24 Billion Monthly – CBN

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) said Point of Sales (POS) transactions value had increased from N38 million per month in 2012 to N24 billion monthly in June, 2014This is contained in a report on e-payment transactions released by the apex bank in Abuja on Monday.According to the report, mobile money transaction values up to N819 million monthly.“The POS transaction increased in volume from less than 2000 in January 2012 to 1.6 million per month as at June 2014.“Over 150,000 POS terminal is presently across the country and 22 mobile money operators has been licensed,’’ it added.It added that licensed Payment Terminal Service providers increased from five to 10 to increase POS terminal penetration across the country.It noted that Nigeria Inter Bank Settlement System (NIBSS) instant Transfer had increased in volume from 87,000 transactions a month in January 2012 to 3.1 million transactions a month as at June 2014.

298 people died yesterday July 17th when Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 was blasted out of the sky at 32,000 by a surface-to-air missile, allegedly by pro-Russian rebels. Among the dead were 80 children, including t hree Australian children, (pictured left), Mo Maslin, 12, (left), his brother Otis, eight, (centre) and sister Evie Maslin, 10, (right) who were traveling with their grandfather Nick Morris. According to  Australian newspapers, the family had been on holiday and the children’s parents had remained in Amsterdam for a few extra days while Mr Norris took his grandchildren on MH17 to get them back to Australia in time for school. Pakistani rights activist, Malala Yousafzai, who survived being shot in the head by Taliban a few years ago for campaigning for girl child education, arrived Abuja, Nigeria in the early hours of Sunday July 13, to raise her voice in the demand to release the kidnapped Chibok girls. Malala, who will celebrate her 17th year birthday on Monday, met with relatives of the more than 200 kidnapped girls who were kidnapped by militant group, Boko Haram, from a school at Chibok in April. Some of the parents broke down into tears as Malala spoke at a hotel in the capital Abuja on Sunday. “I can see those girls as my sisters … and I’m going to speak up for them until they are released,” said Malala. “I’m going to participate actively in the ‘bring back our girls’ campaign to make sure that they return safely and they continue their education.

Keshi Reportedly Requests for N10Million a Month in New Contract

Stephen Keshi , who earlier announced that his contract as the head coach of the Super Eagles  had expired, has presented the  Nigeria Football Federation (NFF)  with his requests to return as the coach. African Football   on Tuesday, reported that Keshi told   President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan   that he will sign a new deal if the NFF agrees to pay him N10million a month. The Nigerian military released a statement on their website today saying that they have cleared and taken over terrorists bases in Borno state and also captured mercenaries. Read the statement below... T roops have cleared and taken over Balmo forest in a military operation that lasted throughout the weekend.  Prior to the operation, Balmo forest stretching from Bauchi through Jigawa States with links to the fringes of Sambisa forest was used by terrorists as bases and hideouts for launching attacks. Terrorists and armed gangs operating in the forests were completely rooted out while some were captured during the operation.  Among those captured were two foreigners who are suspected to be mercenaries. Also captured are several weapons and equipment including power generating sets, communication equipment, vehicles, motorcycles, foodstuff and kitchen utensils.

$620,000 Bribe: ICPC Re-arraigns Farouk Lawan, Emenalo

Two members of the House of Representatives Ad-Hoc committee, which probed the scam in the fuel subsidy regime in 2012, Farouk Lawan and Boniface Emenalo, have been re-arraigned for collecting $620,000 bribe in their course of duty. The Independent and Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) re-arraigned the two men on a seven-count charge before Justice Banjoko of a Federal Territory High Court in Gudu, Abuja. The two legislators again pleaded not guilty to all the counts on Wednesday, as they earlier did on February 1, 2013, when they were first arraigned.

Suarez had to undergo keyhole surgery on his knee last month, inciting fears that he could miss a huge part of the tournament. Nigeria’s multibillion naira drones obsolete – Israeli Expert

Vanguard reports that Tsur Dvir, a Marketing Officer for Aeronautics Defense Systems, a firm based south of Tel Aviv, that supplied Nigeria with Aerostar unmanned aerial vehicles, said yesterday that to the best of their knowledge, the drones are not operational. "To the best of our knowledge, these systems are not operational. They (drones) are probably parked in a yard somewhere". He said lack of maintenance have reduced their operational effectiveness and made them obsolete.  Tsur said they received a letter of inquiry for maintenance on the drones from the Nigerian govt but it was never followed through "We did receive an inquiry from them about spare parts, but it never turned into a deal. I wish it had.” he said. Borno State to spend N150m to rehabilitate 53 escapee girls, parents

Kassim Shettima Borno State governor said the state government would spend 150 million naira for the rehabilitation of the 53 girls that escaped from boko haram abduction.The Governor made this announcement when he received the Presidential Fact Finding Committee on the missing girls in his office yesterday. Gov Shettima decried the notion by some people that the missing Chibok girls was a scam or that it was a staged attempt by the state government to stop emergency rule extension in the state.  The Governor also revealed that since the beginning of this year, N1billion has been spent on the rehabilitation of people and places that have experienced attacks from Boko Haram.  "In this year alone, we had spent close to one billion naira on victims.
