Court dismisses Bobrisky’s fundamental rights suit against EFCC

Justice Alexander Owoeye of a Federal High Court in Lagos has dismissed a fundamental rights suit filed by Okuneye Idris Olanrewaju, popularly known as Bobrisky, against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).   Bobrisky had sought N200 million from the EFCC for “psychotic trauma” and demanded N1 billion from the National Assembly for the “violation of his right to a fair hearing.” He also urged the court to restrain the EFCC and the National Assembly from “harassing, detaining, or declaring him wanted.” Delivering judgment on the case on Thursday, November 28, Justice Owoeye ruled that Bobrisky’s claims of rights violations lacked merit and were unsupported by credible evidence.   The EFCC’s spokesman, Dele Oyewale, disclosed this in a statement on Friday.   “Having evaluated the evidence placed before this Court by the Applicant, it is evident that the Applicant has failed to provide credible evidence to justify the award of the declaratory and injunctive r...

UK made over N68bn off Nigerian visa applicants between 2023-2024

Between June 2023 and the same month in 2024, the British government earned over N68 billion from processing visas for Nigerian applicants. Marc Owen , the Director of Visa, Status, and Information Services at the United Kingdom Visas and Immigration made this known at the launch of Africa’s biggest UK visa application centre (VAC) in Lagos on Thursday, November 28, 2024. Trump says Mexico’s president has ‘agreed to stop’ migrants crossing into US through her country

US President-elect, Donald Trump said Wednesday that he has received assurances from Mexico’s new president that she will “stop migration” though her country and into the US.   Trump announced earlier this week that he planned to slap a 25% tariff on Mexican imports to get the country to crack down on illegal immigration and drug smuggling.   Canada and China would also be hit with 25% and 10% tariffs, respectively, as part of the executive order, Trump said. “Just had a wonderful conversation with the new President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.  “She has agreed to stop Migration through Mexico, and into the United States, effectively closing our Southern Border,” he added.   Trump, 78, noted that he and Sheinbaum Pardo also discussed illegal drugs coming into the US from south of the border during their “very productive conversation.”   “ We also talked about what can be done to stop the massive drug inflow into the United St...

Polytechnics lecturers begin strike December 2

THE Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP, on Thursday, announced that it will begin a two-week warning strike beginning from December 2, 2024, over the inability of the government to resolve its eleven item demands. Cardinal among the demand is the appointment of a Rector in Federal Polytechnic Nekede without following the due process and in violation of Federal Polytechnics Act. President of ASUP, Comrade Kpanja Shamnah, disclosed this while briefing journalists at the end of its 112 National Executive Council, NEC, meeting in Abuja. Recall that ASUP had issued a 15-day ultimatum to the Federal Government and other relevant agencies to immediately review and reverse all decisions inconsistent with the provisions of the Polytechnics Act and other governance instruments in the sub-sector. Finnish court sets May 2025 deadline for Simon Ekpa’s trial

Pro-Biafran separatist leader Simon Ekpa is set to stand trial in Finland by May 2025, Finnish authorities have announced. Ekpa, who was arrested alongside four others on suspicion of terrorism-related activities, remains in custody at the Päijät-Häme District Court. Senior Detective Superintendent Mikko Laaksonen of Finland’s National Bureau of Investigation confirmed the trial timeline. The date for bringing up possible charges by the prosecution was set by the district court to May 2025,” he said, according to  Punch . Laaksonen added that both Ekpa and Finnish authorities could request a re-evaluation of the case in two weeks if necessary. TETFund suspends foreign scholarships over cost and abscondment

The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has announced the suspension of the foreign component of its TETFund Scholarship for Academic Staff (TSAS) Intervention, effective January 1, 2025.   This decision, outlined in a letter dated November 25, 2024, and signed by TETFund's Executive Secretary, Arc. Sonny Echono, cites the escalating cost of overseas training and an increasing number of scholars absconding as reasons for the suspension. The letter was addressed to heads of beneficiary institutions, including vice chancellors, rectors, and provosts. "In response to the current excessive cost of training in foreign institutions, coupled with the high rate of abscondment of scholars, the Board of Trustees of the Fund has approved the suspension of the foreign component of the TSAS Intervention," the letter stated.   TETFund has directed beneficiary institutions to prioritize local training within Nigerian universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.
