UK pledges to help Nigeria tackle terrorism, insecurity

The United Kingdom has pledged to help Nigeria in the fight against terrorism and insecurity being perpetrated by the Boko Haram and Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists in the northern parts of the country.

The pledge by the British government was contained in a communiqué at the end of the inaugural ‘UK-Nigeria Security and Defence Partnership’ dialogue held in London on Thursday.

At the end of the dialogue, the two countries affirmed their commitments to deepen partnership in the face of “complex and evolving global threats, including human trafficking, serious and organised crimes, drug trafficking, cyber-crime and piracy.”

In the communiqué jointly issued by the UK National Security Adviser, Sir Stephen Lovegrove, and Nigerian National Security Adviser, Maj. Gen. Babagana Monguno (retd.) the two countries agreed to “enhance existing cooperation in civilian policing; approaches to stabilisation including civilian-led security and civil-military co-operation; human rights; women and youth, peace and security.

Other areas to be covered by the agreement include “defence co-operation and maritime security; serious and organised crimes, drug trafficking, human trafficking and border security; and countering terrorism and violent extremism.”

The two countries also committed to working in close partnership to tackle illicit financial flows, terrorism and violent extremism.

The UK government also offered to share insight on terrorist financing, trans-border movements and the illegal movement of small arms and light weapons with Nigeria.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) said Point of Sales (POS) transactions value had increased from N38 million per month in 2012 to N24 billion monthly in June, 2014This is contained in a report on e-payment transactions released by the apex bank in Abuja on Monday.According to the report, mobile money transaction values up to N819 million monthly.“The POS transaction increased in volume from less than 2000 in January 2012 to 1.6 million per month as at June 2014.“Over 150,000 POS terminal is presently across the country and 22 mobile money operators has been licensed,’’ it added.It added that licensed Payment Terminal Service providers increased from five to 10 to increase POS terminal penetration across the country.It noted that Nigeria Inter Bank Settlement System (NIBSS) instant Transfer had increased in volume from 87,000 transactions a month in January 2012 to 3.1 million transactions a month as at June 2014.

  A former Minister of Aviation, Osita Chidoka, has appealed to Anambra state pupil, Mmesoma Ejikeme, whose JAMB result was withdrawn, to ‘’come clean" with the source of her result so he can beg the board to show some leniecy towards her.   In a statement released on Wednesday July 5, Chidoka, who is also the owner of the Computer-Based Testing (CBT) Centre where Mmesoma sat for her examination, said he will beg the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) for leniency, if she explains how she got the result she was parading. He pointed out that the result Mmesoma was parading had the initial name on his center which has since been changed. His statement reads;     “Miss Nmesoma Ejikeme took her 2023 JAMB at my foundation’s Computer-Based Testing (CBT) Center at Obosi. I got some calls from worried friends about Nmesoma’s result, which had Thomas Chidoka Center as her examination center.
